Beer of the Weekend #679: 60 Minute IPA
The other beer I brought back from Chicagoland was, I believe, the first I have bought from the legendary Dogfish Head Craft Brewery of Milton, Delaware: 60 Minute IPA.
60 Minute IPA pours a clean, clear, deep gold into a pint glass and a finger of buttery, eggshell-colored head settles slowly, leaving short trails of lacing. Carbonation rises from the bottom. The aroma is malty with hints of citrus. Toasted malt, toffee, cocoa, and perhaps some rye spice. The citrus is muted but there is a hint of zest. (The beer’s webpage says it has “a lot of citrusy hop character,” so perhaps this sixer had been sitting around for a while. Though it is not like brewery’s descriptions of their own beers are 100 percent trustworthy…) The flavor is mostly malty and it is much more of a British IPA with toasted malt, caramel, toffee, a touch of cocoa, a hint of citrus zest, and what I think is rye spice that complements the bitterness. The bitterness is prominent at first, though not overpowering, and it works the tonsils. As the beer warms, the bitterness fades a touch and the malts shine.
