Beer of the Weekend #591: Outlaw IPA
Whoa. I’m watching the Ottawa–Edmonton Canadian Football League game and just saw the first touchdown I have seen since February. It felt good. It felt good.
(Apparently, this is the inaugural season for the Ottawa RedBlacks, and the touchdown I saw was the first running TD in RedBlacks history. To be honest, I’m not sure what to think about the “RedBlacks” nickname. It is…interesting. Of course, what else can one expect from a league with a 110-yard field, only three downs, and had two teams with essentially the same name at the same time?)
(So I just read that the historic CFL franchise in Ottawa, the Rough Riders, were also known as the Red and Black. Now it makes sense.)
Anyway, the beer of the weekend is Outlaw IPA, brewed by the Two Brothers Brewing Company of Warrenville, Illinois.
Serving type: 12-ounce can. “10/07/14” is printed on the bottom of the can.
Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is hazy, caramel-amber. Not much foam develops from the pour and it leave a very thin and spotted skim and ring around the edge.
Smell: Very sweet for an IPA. Sweet, candy-like caramel, malts, cherry licorice, strawberry lemonade, and light grapefruit.
Taste: It offers a yin and yang of sweetness and bitterness. It starts off sweet and finishes dry and bitter. Caramel, pale malts, toffee, cherry licorice, earthy hops, and a little grapefruit. The mouthfeel is full and creamy.
Drinkability: It’s an okay brew. It is not exactly what I prefer from an IPA, but it is a very drinkable version with solid flavor.

-Alcohol content: 6.3 percent ABV.
-IBUs: 60.
-Despite the fact there have been Mad Dogs, Pirates, and Posse, there has yet to be a CFL team named Outlaws.
The Quiet Man’s grade: C+.
