Beer of the Weekend #479: Old Chub
Friends and fireworks took precedent last night so this week’s proper BotW is a day late. The beer of the weekend is Old Chub, brewed by the Oskar Blues Brewing Company of Longmont, Colorado.
Serving type: 12-ounce can. The “CANNED ON” date on the bottom of the can is “03-26-2013 @10:03.”
Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is mahogany. A pathetic half-finger of light tan head left a very thin ring around the edge and a razor-thin skim in the center of the glass.
Smell: Malty with lots of cocoa. Caramel, toffee, molasses, sweet tea, a little cinnamon, maybe some smoked malts, and a touch of peat. Overall, though, the aroma is pretty weak.
Taste: Medium mouthfeel. The taste is quite a tease. Though thin at first, it begins to come on strong. The peat is most prominent and there are some smoked malts. The alcohol is pronounced, too, hanging out in the background of every sip. There are also flavors of caramel and honey, and the cinnamon from the smell offers a nice little spice.
Drinkability: I was pretty disappointed by the aroma, but the flavor slowly won me over. However, I expected it to be a little creamier and did care for the booze.
Fun facts about Old Chub:
-Style: Scotch Ale.
-Price: I can’t remember. I bought it at Otto’s Elm Grove Liquor’s, though.
-Serving temperature: 45-50ºF.
-Alcohol content: 8 percent ABV.
-An SUV always parked on College Street has an Old Chub sticker on the back window. I assume the owner has tried Old Chub and have been pretty jealous. However, now I can say I have tried it, too — and been relatively disappointed. “Haw haw!”
-Written round the top of the can is “A Virtual Planetoid” and “It’s Like Sputnik.” Okay… I have no clue where that came from.
The Quiet Man’s grade: B-.
