The Novel Diary: Week 28
Word counts: 3,143 (Chapter 6); 33,750 (total).
Last week I gave yet another lackluster effort. I only wrote three nights. Sunday night was excusable — as it was again last night for a late softball game — but on Thursday I just zoned out. I found myself hopelessly stuck in one of those Wikipedia page link-athons, where I read something interesting, click on the related link, read something interesting, click on the related link, go back a couple pages, read something interesting… Chapter 6 was open behind my web browser, but it went unloved that night.
College football season starts in 36 days — September 1. (For the media, which has descended on each conference’s respective media orgy, it has already begun.) As you may remember, I started Chapter 1 the day after the National Championship game way back in January, so the advent of a new season has made me assess my progress so far. Frankly, it has been pathetic. Absolutely fucking pathetic. Though I have never gotten anywhere near this far in previous incarnations of this novel, I think I can do much better. I know I can do much better. However, every week is the same shit. But, at least I have stuck with it. I am still committed, much to the detriment of my other writing endeavors. (Other than blogging and the occasional LV piece, there have been none.) College football has yet to kick off, and I want to surpass 40k before then. I think I can do it easily if I put my mind to it.
Of course, college football brings up another question: how productive will I be during the season? My Sunday through Thursday writing schedule will remain, as it has for years, but I know I will be tempted to watch midweek games just to cram in as much football watching as possible. (FOOTBALL!) Except for what happened in the Big Ten, I was really out of the loop regarding college basketball last season. I do not want the same to happen with football this fall, so I will work something out.
