Beer of the Weekend #57: Sierra Nevada Porter
Well, my bracket took a beating. I’m still perfect in the South, but only Louisville remains in the Midwest. Regardless, I’m 6 for 8 in the Elite Eight and three of my Final Four picks are still alive (grrr, Memphis).
The beer this weekend is Sierra Nevada Porter brewed by the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company of Chico, California.
Serving type: Six 12-ounce bottles.
Appearance: Poured a very dark brown. Two fingers of foamy head formed (mainly because I messed up the pour) and slowly dissipated to a creamy, cappuccino like froth.
Smell: Carmel and chocolate dominate, and there’s a hint of coffee malts. Smells halfway between an oatmeal stout and brown ale.
Taste: The caramel and chocolate are present, but the coffee malts take the lead. There’s a surprising bitter tail when it goes down. Just like the smell, it’s halfway between an oatmeal stout and a brown ale.
Drinkability: It’s balanced and smooth. The drinkability factor is high. Very enjoyable.
Fun facts about Sierra Nevada Porter:
-Serving temperature: 45-50°F.
-Alcohol content: 5.6 percent ABV.
-Food pairings: BA recommends the usual stout pairings. Barbeque, cheese (buttery like Brie, Gouda, and Swiss), chocolate, and smoked or grilled meat.
-The Sierra Nevada brewery is committed to becoming 100 percent operational on renewable energy. Last year the brewery finished construction on one of the largest privately owned solar panel arrays. The 6700 panels generate 1.4 megawatts of electricity.
-Unlike Sierra Nevada Stout, which I had a few weeks ago, the Bros on BeerAdvocate got this one right, at least in my opinion.
The Quiet Man’s grade: A-.
