Beer of the Weekend #23: Weihenstephan Hefeweissbier Dunkel
The beer of the weekend this week is Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel brewed by Brauerei Weihenstephan of Freising, Germany.
Serving type: Six 16.9-ounce bottles.
Appearance: Cloudy caramel with a thick, foamy head. I really messed up my first pour and had to let the fast rising head dissipate a little.
Smell: A mix of apples and bananas. There’s also a scent of cloves and black licorice.
Taste: A mellow but very flavorful taste of apples and bananas. Toasty malts with a hint of maple syrup, too.
Drinkability: Very drinkable, like most of the beers I’ve sampled. Maybe I should retire this category. But it does serve a purpose.
Fun facts about Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel:
-Alcohol content: 5.3 percent ABV.
-Serving temp.: 48-54°F
-A food pairing suggested from Michael Jackson’s "Great Beer Guide" is sweet pancakes. Mmm. Booze for breakfast.
-Think all those fruity flavors are additives? Nope. They are all derived from the natural intermingling of water, malt, hops, and yeast.
The Quiet Man’s grade: A.
