Adventures with tofu

You know you're a dedicated vegetarian when — besides having not eaten meat for months — you buy tofu.

Last Friday I bought and cook tofu for the first time. It was an adventure in cooking, and I thought I'd document it with my digital.

So here's what I picked up at Ralph's on Friday night.

The packages were on sale for 10/$10, but I only got one. A vegan friend told me he always gets the "firm" tofu — it comes in a variety of consistency — so I decided to start with his example.

After some miscues trying to pull off the top seal, I cut into the label to reveal the slab of coagulated soy milk.

The slab out of the container and dried on the outside.

The slab cut into pieces. The smell reminded me of the insides of hospital gloves.

Into little cubes for frying.

I had no clue how to cook it, so I decided to use my favorite method, also advised by my vegan friend.

Residue from the slab. Looks like...

I added a green pepper.

The intrepid chef.

The cubes began to turn a golden brown, so I knew I was doing something right.

The browning of the tofu reminded me of cooking fish (which I've decided to continue eating, though very sparingly), but it didn't smell as good. There actually wasn't much odor at all.

Right about here it looked ready. Plus, I was hungry as hell.

Condiments to spice it up. I'm all about ranch dressing.

Dished up...

...and mixed up. I didn't want to have a full bowl at first; I just wanted to try it out.

Mmmm. Not bad.

After another bowl I decided to save the rest. I had no clue how my stomach and digestive system would handle it.
